India has lost further than ₹ 120 crore alone in the digital arrest fraud in the first quarter of 2024 as stressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a recent session of Mann ki Baat. The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) revealed that around 7.4 lakh complaints were filed for digital arrest fraud in the first quarter (January to April).
Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) has revealed that the victims of these swindles have lost around ₹ 1776 crores across the scammers operating from Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia. Out of this quantum, Indians have lost Rs 1,420.48 crore in trading fiddle Rs 222.58 crore in investment fiddl,e and Rs 13.23 crore in love/ courting fiddle.

In this digital arrest fiddle, a scammer calls the victims and tells them that they have transferred or entered a parcel that contains some illegal goods, products, medicines, or some other stuff. Once the victim is induced, they’re told to come on Skype or any other videotape calling platform where these scammers pose as law enforcement officers. They are seen wearing uniforms and calling from a place that resembles a police station or some other government office. After getting the victim then they start demanding plutocrats for concession and to close the case.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that a large number of similar fraud videotape calling IDs were blocked with lakhs of sim cards by government agencies. He also stated that in order to be completely defended by these swindles, people should be apprehensive of similar swindles.
