Why was Nimisha Priya Sentenced to Death in Yemen?
According to reports in Yemeni media, Nimisha Priya, a native of Kollengode in Palakkad who was married to Tommy Thomas of Kerala and had a daughter, moved to Yemen in 2011. There Nimisha opened a clinic in partnership with Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. Nimisha Priya said that Yemeni youth Mahdi forged her documents and claimed to be her husband while subjecting her to physical and emotional abuse. She also reported that Mahedi harassed her and snatched her passport.
Yemeni National’s Murder
Nimisha Priya injected Talal Abdo Mahdi with anaesthesia to take the passport in July 2017. Although it did not have any effect on Mahdi, Nimisha then gave him an overdose of the drug, which killed him. After this, Nimisha was arrested while trying to escape from Yemen. In 2018, she was convicted of murder. She was sentenced to death in 2020 at Sana’s trial court.
The Supreme Court of Yemen confirmed the verdict in November 2023 but the court kept the option of blood money open. Blood money is money or compensation that is decided by the offender. In opposition to the trial court’s order, Nimisha’s family proceeded towards the Supreme Court of Yemen but their request was repudiated in 2023. Now Nimisha’s death sentence has been approved by the President of Yemen.
