Childhood and early life

Ratan Tata was born on 28 December 1937 to Naval Tata and Sonu Tata. He has a brother, Jimmy, and a half-brother, Noel Tata. Ratan Tata’s parents left him when he was 10 years old. Both brothers were brought up by their grandmother Nawazbai Tata. His early schooling was at the Campion School and John Connon School in Mumbai. From Cornell University, USA, he received his degree in Architecture with Structural Engineering. In 1975 at Harvard Business School, he completed an advanced management program.

In 1962 he joined Tata Sons, where he worked on the floor. It was a tough and difficult job, but he gained experience and an understanding of the family business. In 1971 he was made Director-in-charge of NELCO (National Radio and Electronics Company Limited). The company was going through a financial crisis. Ratan Tata worked hard to build a better consumer electronics division, but due to economic recession and union issues, he could not succeed.

In 1977 he was transferred to Empress Mills, another struggling unit of the Tata Group. He made a plan for the revival of the mill, but other company officials rejected it and the mill was closed. Ratan Tata was again transferred to Tata Industries.

In 1991, JRD Tata appointed Ratan Tata as the Chairman of the Tata Group. There were objections from other officials amid concerns about his ability to handle responsibilities. After coming to the top of the Tata Group, Ratan Tata successfully improved the overall condition of the organization. He revised the division’s management and approach and also managed to increase the dividend. During this period, he was also a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry. He was on RAND’s advisory board for Asia Pacific policy.

Ratan Tata is an active member of India’s AIDS Initiative program. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board of Mitsubishi Corporation, JPMorgan Chase, Booz Allen Hamilton, and American International Group.

Ratan Tata resigned as Chairman of the Tata Group in December 2012, on his 75th birthday. Cyrus Mistry, managing director of Shapoorji Pallonji Group, became the new chairman of the Tata Group. He served as interim president from October 2016 to February 2017.

Even after retirement, they do not step back as they still actively invest in new promising business ventures. He is a dedicated philanthropist and contributes significantly to various charitable causes in the country.

Ratan Tata – Major Successes

As Chairman of the Tata Group, he took the company to such heights that it received prestigious recognition at the international level. The company also achieved great financial success. The Tata Group also reached the New York Stock Exchange. Under his leadership, the Tata Group became a global brand with the acquisition of companies such as Corus, Jaguar Land Rover, and Tetley. The Tata Nano and Tata Indica automobiles were conceived and manufactured under his leadership.

As a major philanthropist, he has invested more than 65 percent of his wealth in charitable trusts. One of the major goals of his life is to provide better living standards for Indians and ensure human development.

Personal life and legacy

Ratan Tata is unmarried. They lead a simple lifestyle. He has a simple house in Mumbai and drives a Tata sedan.
