Justice for Moumita

On 15th August 2024, Indians celebrated Independence Day. But the question arises, are we really independent? Or are the women in our country really Independent to be précised? The answer would be a big no. Here is some info about the ‘Justice for Moumita’ protest.

About the incident-

On 9th August 2024, Moumita Debnath, a 31 year old trainee in the Chest department of a renowned medical college, RG Kar Medical College got raped and murdered. Her friends and companions told that they all were sitting in the seminar hall. They all had their food and then left. Meanwhile, Moumita stayed there for her night-shift and decided to take a small nap before attending the duty. She even called her parents and told that everything was fine; she was just exhausted after a 36 hour duty.

The next morning, her parents got the call from the College that their daughter is sick and they should come immediately. When they reached there, they were told that Moumita committed a suicide. They were not even allowed to see the body of their own daughter. After the postpartum reports came out, it was found that she got gang raped and then she was murdered. 150 grams of semen was found inside her body. (Where, one man can only have up to 10-15 grams. Hence, it is assumed that it was a gang rape.) Her body was found semi-naked and her legs were at a 90 degree angle. The whole body was injured and her specs were crushed into her eyes.

Protest ‘Justice for Moumita’-

After not getting any replies from the High Court about the justice, people of Kolkata went on to roads to protest Justice for Moumita. A mob of over 7000 people started the protest, which later got swelled. The RG Kar Medical College was vandalized by the mob. The DCP and other officials were majorly harmed during the protest march. The whole internet is demanding Justice for Moumita. People are even comparing this to the Nirbhaya case that happened 12 years ago. Netizens are saying that no justice would be provided as it was not given to Nirbhaya for 11 years. The government has not taken any action nor given any answers to the demands of people.
