One of India’s most prominent economists and Padma Shri awardee Mr. Bibek Debroy took his last breath at the age of 69 today on 1st November 2024 at around 7 am. He was admitted to AIIMS. The cause of death was due to intestinal obstruction as reported by the doctors. Mr. Bibek Debroy was also the chairman of PM Narendra Modi’s economic advisory council. He was also appointed as the chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune earlier. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also shared his condolence regarding the passing away of Mr. Bibek Debroy referring to him as a “towering scholar”. He also said that Mr. Debroy has left behind a deep and unforgettable mark on India’s intellectual landscape.

Mr. Debroy completed his schooling at Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur. Further, he went on to pursue his education at Presidency College, Kolkata, and Delhi School of Economics, and finally to Trinity College, Cambridge. He had also been a member of NITI Aayog till June 5, 2019. He is also the author and editor of several books, papers, and some popular articles. He has also been a Consultant/Contributing Editor with a number of newspapers.
