Central Govt to Engineers Registration Like Doctors and Lawyers

In India, like architects, lawyers, and pharmacists, engineers do not need Engineers Registration to practice professionally, but now the central government wants to start the process of Engineers Registration by forming a council. The central government is preparing to bring the Professional Engineer Bill. Feedback has been sought on the draft bill by April 10.

Engineers will also be registered in India on the lines of doctors, lawyers, CAs. The central government has proposed to form an apex regulatory body for engineers like the Architecture, Law, and Pharmacy Council. The government is preparing to bring the Professional Engineers Bill-2025. Indian Professional Engineers Council (IPEC) will be formed, which will work to get professional status to engineers in India through engineers registration.

The Professional Engineers Council will register, monitor, and regulate engineers through engineers’ registration. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued a draft bill to formalize the IPEC and has sought public comments on the proposal by April 10. AICTE Vice President Dr. Abhay Jere says that this is the first centralized Engineers Registration system for engineers in India. This will also provide opportunities for training and skill development programs for registered engineers for a better career.

Why a new council for engineers?

Unlike architects, lawyers, and pharmacists, engineers in India do not require Engineers Registration to practice professionally. However, with the rapid expansion of the engineering field and the growing demand for regulated quality standards, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommended the creation of an independent body for engineering professionals. To ensure better skill development, accountability, and ethical standards, the central government has taken steps towards setting up IPEC. All India Council for Educational Research (AICTE) will require Engineers Registration for new and old students pursuing engineering from IITs, IIITs, and NITs.

Who will be in the council who will oversee?

The council will have 27 members, 16 nominated members, and 11 representatives of recognized engineering institutes. These will include the Secretary of the Union Education Ministry, the Director of IIT, the former Chairman of AICTE, experts from the engineering industry, and members nominated by the government. The chairman of the council will be selected by an independent search committee. The government has sought feedback from the public on the draft bill by April 10. Based on the feedback, the bill will be revised before being submitted for approval. Engineers’ Registration will be a crucial step towards ensuring professional accountability and quality in the engineering field.
