ANI Bangladesh: After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5 due to a violent student movement, East Bangla now seems to be moving on the path of becoming an Islamic country. The country’s Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman has advocated for this. He has suggested making major changes in the constitution and removing many keywords including secularism.

90% Muslim Population:
He said that socialism and secularism do not present the true picture of a country where 90 per cent of the population is Muslim. According to United News of East Bangla, Asaduzzaman has suggested removing provisions such as socialism, Bengali nationalism, and secularism and giving Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the title of Father of the Nation.
Validity of Constitutional Amendment:
He made such a plea on the fifth day of the ongoing hearing in the High Court on the validity of the 15th Constitution Amendment of East Bangla. He advocated for restoring the original phrase, which emphasized unwavering faith in Allah. He also questioned the relevance of Bengali nationalism in Article Nine and called it inconsistent with modern democratic principles. Asaduzzaman argued that these changes would make the country democratic and in line with its historical character
Only Selected Provisions Remain:
He also appealed to reintroduce the provision of referendum, which was abolished in the 15th Amendment. The Attorney General also opposed the move to abolish the caretaker government system and said that it was an attack on democracy. Finally, he said that the interim government wants to declare the 15th Amendment largely unconstitutional and wants to retain only a few selected provisions.
Bangladesh Students Protest:
Asaduzzaman spoke to the media after the hearing and said retaining the 15th constitutional amendment undermines the spirit of the Liberation War, the mass uprising of 1990, and the student movement in July this year.
