Screen Addiction is a modern day problem that we are seeing in people around us, especially among children. Studies conducted recently have shown an average screen time of about 2 to 4 hours daily among children. The number is higher among children living in urban areas.
A recent survey conducted online revealed that about 52% of children are spending more than 2 hours daily looking at smartphones, laptops, or PC screens. These are serious numbers as higher screen time may lead to physical and mental issues like sleeping problems, myopia, and other such problems. Among all devices, smartphone addiction is the most common among teenagers as they spend around 3 to 4 hours daily on their phones. The result is reduced physical activity which often leads to problems like anxiety and depression.

These problems can be tackled if parents handle their children’s desire to spend too much time in front of screens. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), has given certain guidelines for the parents regarding this. Not exposing a child below 2 years of age to any type of screen except for some video calls.
Limiting screen time to about 1 hour or less for children between 2 to 5 years can control screen addiction. Balancing screen time with some other forms of physical activities including proper sleep, quality time with family, developing a hobby, etc. is also a good way to reduce screen addiction.
