According to the American Academy of Neurology report, if you are not getting good quality sleep in your 40s can affect your brain health later in life. People whose sleep quality starts to deteriorate around the age of 40 may have a brain age that is 1.6 to 2.6 years older than people who regularly sleep well. Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and other institutions who conducted this research reported their findings.

“Health organizations are constantly working to keep our brains healthy, from how to maintain sleep to how dangerous sleeping in can be for our brains. These include maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, exercising, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed, and using relaxation techniques,” study author Christine Yaffe, MD, a professor of psychiatry at UCSF and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, said in a news release.

A new study suggests that people who have difficulty sleeping in their 40s have a brain age that’s 1.6 to 2.6 years longer by age 50 than those who consistently get good sleep. Experts say good sleep can improve brain health and reduce the risk of dementia and may also reduce inflammation in the body and boost the immune system. You can promote good sleep by exercising during the day, putting away electronic devices before bedtime, going to bed around the same time every night, and sleeping in a cool, dark room.

Why quality sleep is essential for brain health

“Sleep is undoubtedly important for brain health,” Kushida told Healthline. “We know that certain sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, can impact neurocognitive function and the risk of cerebrovascular disease. Additionally, poor sleep has a significant relationship with brain aging as shown in studies.”
