INS Arnala: Indian Navy First Shallow Water Craft To Defeat Subs
The country’s first anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW-SWC), INS Arnala in the Indian navy, was commissioned on Wednesday. It was commissioned at the Navy Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. CDS General Anil Chauhan was present as the chief guest at the event.
‘Arnala’ is named after the historic Arnala Fort located in Vasai, Maharashtra, which symbolises India’s rich maritime heritage and legacy. This ship has been designed for the strong presence of the Navy in the Indian Ocean. Which will detect, track, and deactivate enemy submarines in shallow waters.
INS Arnala was handed over to the Indian Navy on 8 May. Today’s commissioning ceremony marked the formal induction of the first of the 16 ASW-SWC category ships into the Indian Navy.
Designed and built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, and M/s L&T Shipbuilders, Arnala, is a testament to the success of a self-reliant India in the defense sector.
On 15 January 2025, three warships, INS Surat (Destroyer), INS Nilgiri (Stealth Frigate), and INS Vagsheer (Submarine) were commissioned. PM Modi had said that these three ultra-modern warships have further strengthened the Navy.

How strong is the Indian Navy
According to media reports, the Indian Navy has a total of 20 submarines. These include 2 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, one nuclear-powered attack submarine, and 17 traditional diesel-electric attack submarines. There are 13 destroyers.
Apart from these, there are 15 frigates, 18 corvettes, an amphibious transport dock (INS Jalashwa), 4 tank landing ships, 8 landing craft utility, a mine countermeasure ship, and 30 patrol ships. The Indian Navy aims to build a navy of 175 vessels by 2035, with 50 ships currently under construction.
As of 2025, the Indian Navy has about 135+ warships in active service. These include various types of ships. At the same time, there are 2 modern aircraft carriers, including INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant.
