Jivitputrika festival, also known as Jitiya is a three days festival celebrated mainly in the states of Nepal, Jharkhand, Bihar and some places in Uttar Pradesh by Tharu caste women. Jivitputrika festival is celebrated for eight days in Jharkhand- starting from the first day of moon till the eighth day of moon. During this Jivitputrika festival Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Lord Surya are workshipped. The mothers fast from the sunrise till moon rise for their offspring for their long life and offering prayers to Lord Surya. This enhances the bond between a mother and their child. Jivitputrika is an important festival in Bihar. The mothers break their fast by having food items. And the mother and child together take a holy dip.

Rituals of Jivitputrika festival are:
- Women wake up early and purify themselves by taking bath.
- Then clean there house properly specially where they do puja.
- The foremost thing is they offer water to lord surya at dawn.
- On the next morning the fast is break by the women by doing prayers and offering water to lord surya.
- Jivitputrika festival took place on Wednesday, 25th September and while taking the holy dip a great incident took place in which 43 people, including 37 children are drowned. And in addition to this 3 other are missing. It occurred in 15 district of the state: East and West Champaran, Buxar, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Kaimur, Nalanda, Siwan, Rohtas, Vaishali, Patna, Saran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarganj, Arwal district, Samastipur.
- Up till now only 43 bodies have got back. The chief minister of that state has decided to give voluntary payment of Rs. 4 lakh to the family of deceased and till now eight family have already received.
