The Citizenship Amendment Act paves the way for granting Indian citizenship to minorities from three neighboring countries (Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh), who have been living in India for a long time. There is no harm to people having Indian citizenship due to this law. There is no threat to people of any community from this law.

Before the Lok Sabha election dates, the Modi government has made a big political move by issuing a notification of the CAA.

What is the Citizenship Amendment Act?                                                  

The Citizenship Amendment Act refers to those people from our neighboring countries who are living in India without citizenship. There is no provision under this law to take away the citizenship of any Indian, irrespective of his religion. There is no threat to people of any community in India from this law.

When was the Citizenship Amendment Act passed?

The Citizenship Amendment Act was proposed by the BJP in the Indian Parliament on 11 December 2019. 125 votes were cast in its favor and 105 votes were cast against it. Due to a large number of votes in favor, the President approved it on 12 December 2019. The full name of CAA is the Citizenship Amendment Act. Before it was passed in Parliament, it was called CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill). After getting the approval of the President, this bill became CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act).

Why is there controversy regarding CAA?                 

The Civil Protection Act grants citizenship CAA to immigrants belonging to specific communities (Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Christian, Buddhist or Parsi) from Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan. Some people say that this provision is discriminatory because it does not include Muslims. Due to this it is surrounded by controversies.

Why have people of Muslim religion not been included in CAA yet?

Home Minister Amit Shah said regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act that Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are Muslim countries. In these countries, people of other communities are tortured in the name of religion because it has a large Muslim population. Therefore Muslims of these countries have not been included in the citizenship law. However, even after this, these people can apply for citizenship CAA, which the government will consider and make a decision.

Who can get citizenship?

Once CAA is implemented, the central government will have full authority to grant citizenship. People belonging to Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Christian, and Parsi religions from neighboring countries who want to come to India for refuge will be given citizenship CAA. Under this law, those people are considered illegal immigrants who have entered without documents or have stayed for more than the prescribed period.

How to apply for citizenship?

To obtain Indian citizenship, one has to apply online. For which an online portal has been prepared through which online. While doing online you will have to tell in which year you came to India. No document of any kind will be taken from the applicant at the time of application. All applications related to citizenship will be transferred online. It will be investigated by the Home Ministry and the applicant will be given citizenship.

The Bill says CAA that on acquiring citizenship

    • Such people will be considered citizens of India from the date of their entry into India.
    • In connection with his continuous campaign, legal action will be taken against him or there will be civil unrest.
