New ODI Captain, Rohit Sharma may not stay as ODI Captain

Indian selectors are likely to adopt a similar long-term approach to the new ODI captain as they have with the Test team leadership.

The next ODI World Cup is in 2027. According to reports, the management wants the same ODI captain too. The current ODI Captain Rohit Sharma turns 40 by the time of the ODI World Cup. Given the uncertainty around his longevity in terms of form and fitness, and the desire to avoid having different captains for each format since Suryakumar Yadav already leads the T20I side.

There has rarely been such instability in the leadership group of Indian cricket, and the selectors are keen to bring clarity. Over the past decade, the captaincy across formats was largely held by Virat Kohli, followed by Rohit Sharma. At present, Suryakumar Yadav is viewed mainly as a T20I specialist. Rohit has stepped away from T20Is and Test cricket, while Rishabh Pant, currently the Test vice-captain, is not a guaranteed selection in the other formats. As for Gill, he still needs to solidify his position in the T20I side.

Honestly many assumed that Rohit Sharma was planning to retire from ODIs after winning the Champions Trophy, a BCCI official said. So far there have been no discussions between him and the selectors about his ODI captain future.

Rohit’s recent approach to ODI batting has taken an intriguing turn. At 38, he has adopted a more aggressive mindset, particularly during the Powerplay overs, mirroring his T20I intent. He delivered a standout performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, showcasing a strong strike rate and making several match-winning contribution. However, maintaining that high tempo consistently has been a challenge since then.

Rohit has consistently stated that he has no intention of stepping away from ODIs. ‘I’m not retiring from this format—just to put an end to any future speculation,’ he clarified after the Champions Trophy final victory in March.

Rohit aims to win the ODI world cup to end his International Carrier, his capataincy may be given to shubhman gill as a furure ODI captain by the BCCI but not yet confirmed.
