Lake of Skeletons

Sonia Mishra/Chamoli: Who doesn’t like the view of lakes? In summer vacations, you will often see people sitting on the banks of the lake seeking peace, but imagine what would happen if you saw human skeletons floating in the same lake instead of fish. You will get scared and run away from there. Yes, Roopkund in Uttarakhand is one such lake, where this happens, which still surprises everyone.

Roopkund Lake is present in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, which is called the ‘Lake of Skeletons’. In this lake, human skeletons are seen in abundance instead of animals including fish. Apart from this, because it is present at an altitude of 16500 feet above sea level, people associated with adventure come here from far and wide to see the lake.

Skeletons are still a mystery!

These skeletons were discovered in 1942 by HK Madhwal, Ranger of Nanda Devi Hunting Reservation. It is said that these bones are from the late 19th century. Earlier, experts believed that the people whose bones are present here must have died due to epidemics, landslides, or snowstorms. But carbon dating done in the 1960s indicated that those people must have been from between the 12th and 15th centuries.

What do scientists say?

After that, in 2004, a team of Indian and European scientists visited this place to get more information about those skeletons. After that, scientists from Hyderabad, Pune, and London determined that people did not die due to disease but to sudden hailstorms or storms.

The series of mysteries continues since 1942:

In the year 1942, British Rangers first saw skeletons here. Since then, this process of knowing the cause of death has been going on continuously. Also, BBC presented its report on this lake in 2021. In that, they said that till now 600-800 skeletons of people have been found here. Due to being buried in the snow, some of them are still found to have flesh on them. The government often describes this lake as a lake full of mysteries, because people do not know much about it.
