18th September is a normal day like today, but there are such incidents related to this day in the country and the world, due to which this date is remembered. Today is a memorable day for India, because something happened on this day, due to which this country came to be known by this name all over the world.
On 18 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly met under the chairmanship of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. There was a long debate regarding the naming of the country. In this debate, the Ambedkar Committee had suggested two names Bharat and India. Apart from this, in this debate, many people had suggested different names for India. 75 years ago, HV Kamath of All India Forward Bloc presented an amendment proposal in the House to change the name of the country from India to Bharat or Bharatvarsha. There were 51 votes against this proposal and 38 votes in favor. After this, this proposal was rejected. The debate of 18 September 1949, chaired by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was the first time that the name of the country was discussed in the Constituent Assembly.

Ambedkar proposed two names of the country, Bharat and India. During the debate on this, Kamath said that every child is named after birth, and soon India will also be named. Some suggestions for the name of the country are prominent, such as Hindustan, Hind, Bharatvarsh, Bharat, and Bharatbhoomi.
When the Constituent Assembly met on 18 September 1949, committee member S.V. Kamath was the first speaker. He said- ‘This is the naming ceremony of the Indian Republic. If there was no need for the naming ceremony, we could have kept the name India, but if we have reached such a stage that we will have to keep a new name, then surely the question will arise as to what name should be kept.
He argued that in reality, Bharat was the son of Dushyant and Shakuntala in the Vedic era. India was named after this. Ambedkar had opposed Kamath’s proposal. Ambedkar had raised questions on the very purpose of this proposal. Kamath had said ‘I feel that India i.e. Bharat is ineligible in the Constitution.’ He called it a constitutional mistake. After Kamath, Brajeshwar Prasad of Bihar said that he does not think there is any problem with India or India. He proposed that Article 1 of the Constitution should state ‘India, that is Bharat’.
Another member of the Constituent Assembly, Seth Govind Das, while quoting the book of Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang, had said that – he has also mentioned the name of our country as India in his book.
