India has launched a second submarine named INS Arighat, equipped with nuclear power and ballistic missiles, to increase its strategic power. Equipped with K-15 missiles and approximately 112 meters long, INS Arighat, along with INS Arihant, will further strengthen India’s missile defense capability. This is an important step towards strengthening India’s military capabilities and long-term strategic plans.

Taking a major step towards further strengthening its strategic deterrence capability, India on Thursday inducted INS Arighat into the Navy. This is the second nuclear-powered submarine in the country, which is still equipped with ballistic missiles carrying nuclear weapons. The approximately 112-meter-long submarine, armed with K-15 missiles with a range of 750 km, was launched at the secret shipbuilding facility in Visakhapatnam in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and national security and military officials.

Important information about INS Arighat:

INS Arighat will join its predecessor INS Arihant. INS Arihant, which became fully operational in 2018, is expected to launch nuclear weapons from land, air, or sea to cover the country’s ‘nuclear triangle’.

Submarine INS Arighat is powered by 83 MW air-light water jets, which allows them to remain underwater for long periods, whereas conventional diesel-electric submarines generally have to stay underwater.

The nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines are named the Arighat class, a Sanskrit word meaning ‘destroyer of the  enemy.’ This name was chosen because of its subtlety and appropriateness.

Under India’s ‘no first use’ nuclear policy, the SBN (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Nuclear Submarine) Plays a role in prevention. Because it is difficult to detect and it is capable of avoiding and retaliating against any sudden attack.

Countries like the US, Russia, and China have large missile technologies with long-range missile capabilities. China has 6 Jin-class SSBNs with JL-3 missiles with a range of 10,000 km. The US has 14 Ohio class SSBNs.
