Excessive Rainfall

After excessive rainfall in Mumbai city which flooded the low lying areas and halting all the local trains and diversion of trains, the vehicular and rail traffic has been resumed in Mumbai after Thrusday. A red alert has been issued in Mumbai and Neighbouring places like: Thane, Raigad and Palghar for Thrusday morning by the Indian Metrological Department because of excessive rainfall. A announcement is made for holiday of school and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Palghar on Thrusday due to extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

According to data of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), all the island cities lying in the eastern suburbs and the western suburbs receive 100.47 mm, 98.24 mm, 168.25 mm of excessive rainfall between 4pm to 10pm. Some of the areas in Mumbai were flooded as by 8:30 pm on Wednesday.

The places that were greatly affected by excessive rainfall were:                                       

  • Mankhurd-276mm
  • Powai- 234 mm
  • Andheri- 260mm
  • Ghatkopar- 259mm
  • Due to excessive rainfall the local trains between Kurla and Thane stations on central line, so many travelers were stuck in the CMST stations, while making traffic at various other places. A case was found in which a 48 years old lady was drowned in the nullah overflowing due to excessive rainfall in Mumbai on Wednesday. After excessive rainfall on Wednesday some of the roads in Mumbai have turned into water beds and fast water running area as several areas received more than 120mm of rainfall in just 6 hours of evening. A another case is found in which two workers at a stone quarry were killed by excessive thunder and lightning.

Stay indoors as much as possible: The advice has been made by the civic bodies and police to all the people living in city and surroundings areas to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid stepping out of home.
