How AI and Technology Are Changing the Future of Jobs?
AI and Technology have already changed the way we work, but with AI getting more advanced, it’s changing even faster. And it won’t stay only in the present; AI and technology are both together changing the future of jobs as well. A few years ago, we couldn’t imagine AI doing some of the tasks that people do today. Now, it’s already becoming a part of many workplaces, so what does that mean for the future of jobs?
AI and technology aren’t only creating new jobs but also changing the existing ones. Repetitive tasks are becoming automated. Some jobs will be requiring new skills. So to keep-up with all of that, people will need to keep learning rather than only relying on what they know. The concern is no longer ‘if’ AI and technology will change jobs because they have already started to, but how they will change it, so people can prepare for their careers accordingly.
Automation Will Change Repetitive Tasks
As AI and technology get more and more incorporated in jobs, automation will also become more and more common. Tasks like data entry, basic calculations, sorting information, scheduling, and generating standard reports, are likely to become increasingly automated.
But automation of these tasks does not mean that it will necessarily take the jobs of people who do all of this manually. It just means that, the way they work will change, they will be working alongside AI and technology, and their work will get easier and quicker. Workers will spend less time doing the same tasks over and over again.
AI Will Create New Jobs
Even though AI will make jobs of some people a lot shorter and easier, it will also give birth to more jobs. There are also multiple such jobs that have expanded and/or emerged because of AI and technology. These roles that have expanded are: Machine learning engineers, Data scientists, Cybersecurity professionals.
When AI and technology create an industry, they also create new roles needed to run that industry; roles that need to be taken by human. Roles like AI specialists, AI trainers, Automation Specialists, AI product managers, have emerged because of AI and technology, while some of them did exist even before AI, but they have expanded significantly around it.
Existing Jobs Will Change
As times are changing, AI and technology are getting more advanced, they will not necessarily take away the jobs of humans, they will change them. A professional may not lose their title because of AI; rather, their way of working may change. A digital marketer may use AI for research, content ideas and data analysis instead of solely relying on their memory or manual research. A graphic designer may use AI-assisted design tools. A teacher may use AI to prepare learning materials instead of asking everybody to buy a book.
So the future may not necessarily be “Human or AI and technology”. But it could be “Human + AI and technology”.
Digital and AI Skills Will Become More Important
As AI and technology get more integrated in jobs, AI and digital skills will become more important. Using AI tools will become more common. Understanding digital platforms, data, AI and technology will become more important. Basic automation will become necessary for jobs that have lots of repetitive tasks. And as getting information from AI gets common, knowing how to check that AI- generated information will also become important.
Integration of digital skills, AI and technology does not mean people have to become programmers or learn some advanced and complex AI engineering. It just means that people have to get digital skills and use of AI that is relevant to their field of career.
Human Skills Will Still Matter
Even though AI and technology can perform many tasks, humans would still be needed for multiple human skills like communication, empathy, leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving. As these things cannot be “generated” by a bot, they can only be produced, understood, and given by a human brain.
For example, AI can help generate a customer service response, but when that customer is angry, only a human will know how to handle them.
Some Jobs May Decline
AI would become an assistive tool for humans, but we also have to acknowledge the fact that it will reduce demand for certain careers, especially the ones that consistently demand repetitive or predictable tasks. This includes jobs like data-entry work, basic administrative tasks, and basic customer-support tasks. But it does not necessarily mean that AI and technology will eliminate the need of humans for these jobs rather it will reduce the number of people needed for them.
Continuous Learning Will Become Necessary
AI and technology keep changing. As they change, people will need to keep learning to stay relevant. Keep upskilling, reskilling, learning new software and practicing new technologies. But doing all of that does not mean that people will have to go through a degree or schooling again. Online courses, certifications or even self-practice in some cases can help.
If somebody still relies on something they learned 10 years ago, they may be left behind. So learning constantly is necessary for growth in your career. As education and learning don’t end because you got a job, they’re an ongoing part of a career.
Remote and Flexible Work Will Keep Changing
AI and Technology have already changed how you work but they have also changed where you work. Remote-work is a lot more common than it was a decade or two ago. And as AI and technology has become more integrated in work, it’s not only relevant to office work. It has been incorporated in remote-work as well. People can use them for things like transcription, scheduling, translation, and organization.
Employers May Start Looking for Different Things
Learning about AI and technology, and becoming more comfortable with it is necessary as it all comes back to employment. Employers may increasingly look for people, who can use technology efficiently, adapt to new tools, work alongside AI, solve problems, and learn quickly. And in order to stay or get employed, you will need to stay relevant. Have the AI and technology handling skills that the employer in your field demands.
For example, there are two candidates, one of them has qualifications but does not know how to use the tools commonly used in that industry. While the other candidate, has the qualifications and the knowledge of tools. The second candidate will have leverage and will be more employable as he can do the job that the role demands.
The Future May Be About Working With AI, Not Against It
People, instead of thinking “Are AI and technology going to take my job?” should start thinking “How can I use them to do my job better?” As it will take away the fear that people are developing about being left jobless, will make them more job-ready, and hopefully grow their career.
In the end, AI and technology is changing how people work instead of trying to eliminate human presence from workplaces. So the future isn’t necessarily humans competing with technology but rather working alongside it.
