Dual PhD Programmes: Benefits and Career Opportunities

The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) has announced a dual PhD programme with Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) of United States. This programme will be applicable from the January 2027 session and the applications will open on 22 September 2026.

This programme is for students who want to pursue a doctoral degree or a dual PhD in engineering. The programme is a collaboration between IIT Mandi and Missouri S&T and it intends to give its students an opportunity to experience studying at both universities.

What is a Dual PhD Programme?

A PhD or Doctor of Philosophy is a degree which is about original research of a chosen subject. It’s the highest level of academic qualification that a person can acquire. It involves researching in the chosen field to discover and add more knowledge to it or solve a major problem.

A Dual PhD on the other hand is when two different institutions come together under a specific academic arrangement. Both the institutions together decide the course structure, academic requirements and the conditions for awarding the degree or degrees. In this case, the participants will receive two degrees from each institution on completion.

Programme Structure for the Dual PhD Programme: Duration and Location

The entire programme is four years long and regular, so full-time attendance will be required. For the first two years the students will be studying at IIT Mandi. In these years students will focus on doctoral coursework, foundational training, and initial research under faculty guidance in India.

For the third and fourth year of the dual PhD, students will be studying at Missouri S&T and will focus on advanced research, dissertation work (writing a long piece of work on what you have researched or studied) and fulfilling the doctoral defence requirements for graduation in the United States.

Participating Schools and Research Areas:

The official website mentions three schools of engineering for this dual PhD programme: School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE), School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (SMME), and School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE). However, students considering this program should first contact the faculty members to check research areas will included as the website does not say that every area in engineering would be allowed to be researched on or what positions are available.

Eligibility Criteria:

The eligibility of an individual to apply for this dual PhD programme depends on their existing qualifications. If the student has a master’s in engineering or technology, the requirements according to the official IIT Mandi website are a master’s degree including a research-based master’s in the relevant field.

If the individual has a master’s in science, the requirements are an exceptional merit; eligibility for the relevant engineering field; and a valid GATE, UGC/CSIR-NET or an equivalent and relevant qualification.

If the student has a bachelor’s in engineering or technology from a CFTI the requirements are a minimum CGPA of 7.5/10 or equivalent. This requirement waived off if the individual is going through the HTRA scholarship route. If the qualification is a bachelor’s in engineering or technology from a non-CFTI, the requirements would still be the same.

If the individual has a bachelor’s in engineering or technology with research experience, the requirements would be minimum 2 years of service at in a reputed R&D organisation and a proof of the research experience may be considered under the state provision.

The main requirement with all qualifications is a good academic record. Not all candidates with a bachelor’s need a GATE score and not all individuals with master’s can get admission without one. We advise individuals interested in this dual PhD programme to check the official website to check more details regarding the eligibility criteria.

Missouri S&T Admission Requirements:

The criteria we discussed earlier were for IIT Mandi, but that’s not the only requirement, individuals will also need to meet the requirement for Missouri S&T to really get enrolled into the dual PhD programme.

International students applying for the dual PhD programme must also fulfill the English proficiency requirements, through TOEFL or IELTS. Students who have taken the GRE exam should submit their scores but this requirement may be waived off for eligible candidates. Students must fulfill the admission qualification requirements for Missouri S&T within one year of commencing the dual PhD programme at IIT Mandi.

Applicants need to make sure admission requirements for both the institutions are met, as fulfilling admission requirements for one institution does not mean they have been for the other too. And this would be needed to truly get the dual PhD.

Scholarship and Application Fee:

The official notice on the website states that individuals who meet at least one qualification criteria are entitled to the Ministry of Education scholarship or assistantship. But this scholarship is for people with specific academic qualifications, examination or other conditions.

Not every student applying for this dual PhD programme automatically receives funding. However the official notice does not state that all the living costs in the US will be covered by the scholarship.

The application fee to apply for this dual PhD programme would be Rs.200 for general, EWS, OBC, OBC-NCL, transgender and foreign nationals, and Rs.100 for women, SC, ST and persons with disabilities(PD). Payments for application are made online.

Potential Benefits of a Dual PhD:

Pursuing a dual PhD at two different institutions one of which is international can have potential benefits including international research exposure, different research environments, academic networking, research development and career possibilities. However these are just potential benefits not something guaranteed in the official notice.

Challenges and Things Applicants Should Consider:

Getting a dual PhD from two big institutions can be really beneficial for one’s career, but it’s also challenging because of the drastic change it might bring and commitments it would require. However it does not mean that every student will have difficulties getting enrolled in the dual PhD programme.

The main challenges include high qualification requirements, international relocation requirement to a completely different country and their institution, financial commitment because shifting abroad and living there costs significantly more, research commitment as it requires perseverance to keep researching and maintaining a project, and the applicants may also need to check whether their goals match the available research positions for them and the work of faculty members.

How to Apply and Important Dates:

Applicants can apply for the Dual PhD programme through the official IIT Mandi’s admission portal. The application start date was 22 September 2026 and the deadline is 30 October 2026, 5:00 PM. The session will start from January 2027. As of now the deadline is approaching do we advise the applicants to recheck the portal for updates before applying.

It has a defined structure, specific qualification requirements and other admission requirements as well. Students considering applying should evaluate all the eligibility criteria and all the commitments it would require before applying. Overall a dual PhD is a good step if you can handle all the potential challenges that come with it.
