Heavy rainfall caused havoc in Pune and the surrounding regions. As a result, the IMD (India Meteorological Department) has issued a red alert in those areas. The schools and offices have been closed for precautions by the order of Suhas Diwase (the district collector).

Havoc in Pune & other areas: 

Thursday, at 4 a.m. water rose at an approx. speed of 27203 cusecs. Due to heavy rains on the previous night, Wednesday, water entered in many houses and buildings in various regions. Suhas Diwase has specially passed a message of alert to everyone to stay indoors as it is absolutely necessary for one’s safety.

Heavy rains led to water discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam. The water has been running out since yesterday at a speed of 40,000 cusecs. This as a result, caused waterlogging in several colonies. Strong winds along with heavy rains caused trees to fall on roads and there is severe traffic jams on the road.

An employee at MNC, Manasi Aradhye mentioned “a usual drive from Wakad Square to Hinjewadi Phase 3 is about 40 minutes. It took me over 80 minutes to reach because of the traffic and the heavy rains.” Numerous tree falling incidents have been reported in areas like Aundh and Wanorwrie. Alert has been passed to not come out of houses as it is really risky for one’s life and not to stand under old trees for shelter as they are prone to fall more.

Reported deaths and tourism: 

Approximately 30 tourists were rescued from Lonavala, as they got stuck due to flooding. Four death reports have been reported up-till now. From which, 3 were dead from electrocutes in Pulachi Wadi and 1 death due to landslide in Adarwadi village. Fire brigade agencies have been reported to various emergencies such as waterlogging in houses and wall collapses. The community has been warned to stay alert and stay at homes.
