Why skill-based education is more important than a traditional degree?

A degree is usually considered proof that an individual is educated, but when it comes to getting employment, can just having a degree indicate that the person can actually work, or do we need something else for it?

Traditionally, having schooling and a degree meant that you were educated, and it was usually considered enough for employment. But now, as times have changed, that’s not the case anymore. Having a degree can be complementary or it could even be necessary in some career fields, but in most of them, in order to be employed, you need to be trained in skill-based education and even have experience to land a good job.

What is Skill-Based education?

Skill-based education is about learning how to actually perform the tasks and/or use the information that you learn theoretically, instead of just memorizing it all. It is important in this age because there are too many people who have degrees and apply for jobs, but having a degree does not always mean that they have the skills needed for the job that they are applying for. That’s when skill-based education comes to the rescue.

Skill-based education actually makes you practice what you will be doing in the job role that you will be applying for in the future. Someone might have memorized all the codes needed for web development but has never practiced coding. We can’t say if that person can actually develop a website or not. But on the other hand, if there’s a person who has been through skill-based education, we can say that they can actually write and run code and develop a website, because they have got the training for it.

Skill-Based Education Gives Practical Experience

Having a skill and having knowledge about a topic are two different things. Skill-based education usually gives you the skill, and a traditional degree usually gives you the knowledge (there are exceptions). Having knowledge means you know the “what” of the topic, but having a skill means you know the “how”.

Skill-based education helps you develop experience by giving you projects, assignments, simulations, real-world problems (and make you find the solution for them) and practical tasks. You become the person who knows how to use the theory to solve problems. This gives you practical experience before you even enter the job market.

It Can Make People More Job Ready

Skill-based education also has one more major advantage: making you job-ready through practical learning. Skill-based education makes sure you don’t just spend time learning general subjects and apply the knowledge much later. Instead it makes you learn much earlier. You learn about the job before you even get it. It makes the transition from studies to job a lot smoother and easier. It also builds your portfolio while you learn.

Someone learning digital marketing through skill-based education will actually run ads, create social media posts, practice SEO, and simultaneously build their portfolio, instead of just memorizing their definitions.

Skill-Based Education Can Help You Stand Out From Other Candidates

Nowadays, there are many candidates with degrees, so having relevant skill-based education can help you stand out from others. When employers hire candidates, they look at multiple similar profiles and qualifications, and at that time a person with skills will have something different and extra to show, making them a more attractive candidate.

For example, there are two candidates applying for a job in graphic designing. The first one has an educational background in graphic design, and the second one does too, but they also have actual designs to show, this would give the employer a better idea of their abilities.

Skills Can Adapt to Changes in the Job Market

Industries keep changing really quickly in this age. Technology keeps changing, software and tools keep changing, and even some jobs change and new jobs emerge at the same time. In this scenario, somebody who only depends on their previous qualifications for their whole career may be left behind, as they won’t be able to keep up with changing trends. But in skill-based education, students are encouraged to keep learning and adapting to their current roles or learn more for new roles.

For example, a digital marketer might know how search algorithms work now, but once they change after a certain period of time, they will need to learn how the new ones work. Someone who is used to continuously developing their skills because of their skill-based education may find it easier to adapt to these changes.

Skill-Based Education Can Offer More Career Flexibility

Traditional degrees usually lead people towards specific career paths, but skill-based education can be used for multiple jobs. For example, someone who knows digital marketing can work in multiple roles like SEO, advertising through Google Ads and/or Meta Ads, content creation, or social media management instead of being limited to one job.

Skill-based education also gives multiple options for the way you can work. You can work a full-time job, part-time job, freelance or work remotely. A degree doesn’t necessarily gives you these skills or options by itself, while skill-based education can give you skills that you can use across different types of careers.

Skill-Based Education Doesn’t Make Degrees Useless

Skill-based education is important, but that does not mean that degrees are useless. In fact, some career fields require formal degrees like medicine, engineering, law, etc. Degrees provide a structured syllabus, theoretical knowledge and scheduled exams, which are also useful to demonstrate your commitment and academic knowledge.

Having skills is necessary for many career paths, but so is having a degree. The best way to grow in your career field is to combine both, and it will make a strong combination for a job profile.

Education + Skills = Better Preparation

Traditional degrees give you foundational knowledge while skill-based education gives you practical experience. Combining both is what will make you a more capable professional. Traditional degrees teach you what the topic is about, and skill-based education makes you use that “what” to learn the “how”. Both are necessary. If you only know the “what”, figuring out the “how” can be really tough, and if you want to learn the “how”, you will most definitely need to know the “what”.

In the end, what is important is what you can do with what you know. Degrees have value, and they give you something very essential, which is knowledge, but today’s world demands more than just having that knowledge. That is, knowing how to use that knowledge to solve problems. Skill-based education fills that gap, as it provides practical abilities and job readiness. But continuous learning and updating your skills are also necessary. Therefore, the question shouldn’t be whether to choose a degree or skills, but rather how to combine a degree + skills.
